Take Home Horse

 

            First year students will work most weeks on a “take-home horse” that will help

them learn (and remember) what different horse parts are.  Ongoing project.

 

 

 

 

 Program Objectives – Intermediate

                                                                                   

Horse Care, Preparation for Showing

 

            Bathing body, mane and tail

            Hoof sanding and painting for the show ring

            Clipping (muzzle, bridle path, ears, etc.)

            Health Care (annual shots/worming schedule, etc.)

            Horse Parts and Terms (cont’d.)

 

Barn Management

 

            Stall Cleaning – different types of bedding/why you’d use each

            Sweeping inside stall doors along with aisle

            Fly / Pest Management (natural fly predators)

            Loading up equipment when going to a horse show

 

Equipment

 

            Taking bridles, saddles, harnesses apart to clean/putting back together

            Names of more detailed tack pieces

            How to properly adjust equipment to horse and rider

 

Rider Development on the Horse (Beginner & Intermediate)

 

            Learn to stop and start the horse properly

            Proper mounting and dismounting - emergency dismounts

            Guide the horse right and left – make reins shorter/longer

            Learn a walk, trot and canter* (English)- *may not canter until 2nd year

            Learn a walk, jog and lope* (Western) –*may not lope until 2nd year

            Learn what a jump position is

            Advanced riders may start English posting and figures

 

Take Home Horse Collage – Second Year Students

 

            We will work on a horse collage for rainy day lessons that will help us to

            learn (and remember) what different horse disciplines, colors and markings are

 

 

Take Home Invisible Horse Model -  Second/Third Year Students

 

            We will work on a horse model for rainy day lessons that will help us to

            learn (and remember) what different horse organs and bones are

Horse Training, Foals

 

            Imprinting:  A way to show foals to trust humans

            Teaching a foal to lead with a halter  

           

Horse Training, Preparation for teaching a horse to be driven

 

            Work on the ground

                Lunging, Bitting Rig, Ground Driving, “loose” work at Liberty

           

 

Properly Hitching and Driving a Horse

 

            Safety First!  Checking your equipment for weaknesses

            How to properly fit the harness and harness bridle to the horse

            How to properly hook the cart to the horse and harness

            Driving the horse and doing patterns

 

Horse Training, Preparation and teaching a horse to be ridden

 

            Using all you’ve learned (and taught your horse) while preparing to drive

Safety First!  Checking your equipment for weaknesses

            How to properly fit the saddle and bridle to the horse

            Blinders vs. no blinders

            Mounting the horse and working with a ground person

 

Rider Development on the Horse (Advanced)

 

            Addressing your reins properly

            Learn and perform any posted pattern work

            Canter figures- correct and incorrect leads

            Should be able to walk, jog, trot, extend the trot, canter, hand-gallop and

              change from any of those gaits to any other

            Jump 18 inch jumps

            Learn trail ride necessities (opening gaits, mailboxes, etc.)

            Change canter leads and posting diagonals during patterns fluently

 

            Work on Pat Parelli Harmony and Synchronicity with your horse (Levels 2 & 3)

 

 

Fees and Payment

 

Lessons are available in hour increments for $40.00 per hour.  $60.00 an hour if I travel to work with you/your horse.  Checks can be made out to Tammy Corbin. Payment in advance or weekly is appreciated.  Thanks!
